While in the UK recently I bought a pyrography set, something I have fancied having a go at for ages now :), so for this challenge I found the perfect image to try my hand. I know many folks probably do their pyrography either free hand or with their own pencil drawing to form the guide lines but for this week project I wanted to use the yummy image Miniature Dachshund. My first challenge was to find a way to transfer the image to my ply wood bone. I printed the image in reverse using my laser printer to begin with and then used Modge Podge to transfer the image.
When the glue was dry I then removed the paper carefully with water. Now I suspected I would have a problem with the glue remaining behind and trapping the laser printed image below it - looks great if you just want to go this far but now I want to burn the wood. As suspected I did have a problem, it sort of worked but the glue formed ridges on either side of my burn lines and sanding afterwards was a real bummer. You can also see on the top right where I have tried to peel the glue off and ended up removing one of the ply wood layers.
Time to try a second way of doing this :) This time I used a desk jet printed and printed on the glossy side of some vinyl protective paper (this is non-porous so the ink is not absorbed into the paper). Very carefully I laid the ply wood bone on top of the printed paper, one slip and it will smudge lol. In the photo below you can see the printed image, well what was left of the ink after I had removed the bone.
Next I went over the lines of my text, paw prints and Ike's image with the pyrography tool. I then burnt the edges of the bone a bit too. Cool, I do like this and have ideas on how to take this further in the future.
As this is going to be a keyring I used my eyelet tool to make a hole in the soft wood and then used Modge Podge to protect the wood and make it a bit stronger.
Finally I dismantled an old keyring and used the chain section to make my dog bone into a usable keyring.
